TARTARUGA BEACH – Tartaruga is the Portuguese word for “Sea Turtle” and the name was chosen by the Owners of Tartaruga Beach Resort because of the many Sea Turtle Shells they found on the beach, when they first came here in 2008, shot by the local spear fisherman, for food. Ever since, they have made an effort to educate these locals in the conservation of the “Tartarugas”.
The Resort is 450 km North of Maputo situated on a peninsula and only a 30 minute drive from the charming town of Inhambane and the Inhambane International Airport and lies just 5 km North of Coconut Bay. The Resort can only be reached with a 4 x 4 vehicle – it’s a challenge….. it’s an adventure….. ONLY the Brave will reach this Best Kept Secret!!!! If it was easy…… it was not so SPECIAL!!!!
The Town of Inhambane offers a daily fresh food market, restaurants and other sight-seeing spots. What makes the town unique, is its heritage. Inhambane is one of the oldest towns in Southern Africa. The old Portuguese architecture and tropical surroundings make the town a historical must-see for every tourist.
As Vasco da Gama rounded Africa in the late 1400’s, he sailed into the beautiful bay of Inhambane to replenish stocks and to explore…. he fell in love with the area and named it “Terra de Boa Gente” – land of the friendly, gentle people.
Forty years later, the Portuguese established a trading post and settled in Mozambique. Inhambane was an important port and still has a large fleet of working dhows.
This historical town is a culture to be experienced, with some beautiful old buildings and a blend of African, Arab and Portuguese influences. Inhambane is a picturesque little town with a laid back charm. Visit the colourful local market for fresh products and woven baskets. Bakeries, banks, ATM’s, a Liquor store, the Wong Rong China Shop and several other shops for supplies.
Our Beach bar & Restaurant was built on “the rocks” as close to the beach possible and we can, without doubt claim to have the BAR with the best sea views. A braai area on the deck is also available for bring & braai functions (the restaurant can provide pap, sauce and salad @ a price per head)
On Sundays & other special days like Easter & Christmas during peak season, we have a church services on big screen and for those special Sport Events.
Special events & parties can be arranged. Friday nights is party night @ Tartaruga Beach bar with difference themes.
A small convenient store is available for basic needs, ice & charcoal.
